FOCUS

The first reference to angels in the Bible is found in Genesis 3:24. Most English translations keep the Hebrew word cherubim. The NET renders that word “angelic sentries.” They were sent to guard the tree of life from being accessed after Adam & Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

As we look today at the role & involvement of angels in the Christmas story, we find they play a key part in it all. Gabriel himself does some traveling & visiting. We’ll end with an overview of the presence of angels in the life of Jesus.

Angels truly are “ministering spirits sent out to serve those who are going to inherit salvation.” (Hebrew 1:14)

What we know about angels from the story of Christ’s birth:

1. God sends them to people who need to hear from Him.

They are curriers of information that includes an angel to validate the message.

Luke 1:5-22 & 1:26-38 Matthew 1:18-20 Luke 2:8-15

2. Their recurring message at Christmas is do not be afraid.

Connected to that admonishment is the knowledge that God is in control.

Luke 1:13 & 30 Matthew 1:20 Luke 2:10

Making It Real

1] How grateful are you for the reality & role of angels in the nativity narratives?

2] Do you take to your heart their recurring message to not be afraid?

Action Step

Write down anything your'e facing concerning which you’re afraid. Prayerfully lift

it to God trusting Him to have His way & hear Him say to you do not be afraid.
